Chocolate Cake Cooking for Kids

Chocolate cake is one of the things that children are eager to prepare with their mom, dad, or grandparents. This represents a good way to get little ones interested in food preparation and kitchen skills.

It is regrettable that children today seem to think that all of the food groups are stored within boxes of fast food that goes in the microwave over. This leads to an inordinate interest in the fast food trio- fat, salt, and sugar.

Begin your cooking adventure with a trip to the kitchen and cooking equipment store. See if there is an excellent cake pan which catches the child’s interest.

You can discuss the various merits of different pans. If a bundt pan is the choice, you could describe how the cake will come out looking at the end. Perhaps the child would prefer a round pan or a rectangular one. There are many choices. This is also a great opportunity for teaching about shopping for excellent items at excellent prices.

Once home you can wash the new pan in the dishwasher so that it is ready to use.

Another outing on the great cake adventure is to the grocery store for ingredients. In the case of a young child, you may wish to simplify the ingredient list. For this first cooking introduction, a prepared cake mix is recommended. Buy a quality chocolate cake mix, eggs, applesauce and some very fine quality of chocolate to add to the cake mix.You may buy a prepared icing if you wish, or skip this step (so that the child does not come to expect cloyingly sweet desserts).

The previous steps may have taken place over several days, depending on your schedule. This will allow for the great emotional build up to the cake preparation adventure.

Your enthusiasm will help build the child’s enthusiasm for the project.

Have the child help you combine the cake mix, eggs, and mix. Instead of water specified in the recipe, try using that same amount of applesauce instead. The will make the cake moist, and will be including some fruit from the applesauce. Add a bit more water as necessary.

Crumble in your fine chocolate, or add the chocolate pieces on top of the batter before baking.

Once the cake is baked and cool, allow your child to continue beautifying it. This may include flipping over the bundt pan, or adding the frosting on top.

Be sure to take pictures along the way, so that your child can remember this event. It would be fun to place the photos in a book with descriptive commentary about the chocolate cake cooking lesson.
